The Folk Union is guided by a small set of principles that try to inform everything we publish, organise and support. They aren't intended as rules or a manifesto, but as an expression of the values that underpin the project. They influence the work we commission, the partnerships we build and the way we hope to contribute to contemporary folk culture. Above all, they are a commitment to our readers, contributors and the communities that make this work possible.

1. KEEP FOLK OPEN


Folk is ordinary culture made by ordinary people. The Folk Union supports projects that keep it accessible and inclusive.

2. FOLK BELONGS TO EVERYONE


Folk culture should never be used to exclude. We reject racism, xenophobia, homophobia and transphobia, and we reject attempts to use tradition as a tool of division in any form.

3. PROTECT THE COMMONS


Projects should avoid treating folk culture as a product. They share culture openly and credit everyone fairly.

4. WORK GENEROUSLY


Fair fees, good treatment of participants, transparency and honesty.

5. CARE FOR PLACE


Folk and landscape are deeply linked. The Folk Union supports projects committed to protecting the environment.
