MEMBERSHIP OF THE FOLK UNION IS OPEN TO ALL
WHO BELIEVE THAT FOLK BELONGS TO THE PEOPLE
The Folk Union is not a heritage society, not a club, not a brand. It is a cultural body. It is a union in the true sense. To join is to stand with working people against enclosure, commodification, and nationalism.
WHY JOIN?
- A voice. As a member, you have a vote in assemblies and a say in how the union is run.
- A commons. You join a body that resists enclosure, keeps folk alive, and supports those who make it.
- A network. You link arms with folk across the country and the union gives its voice to support folk practitioners, projects, and campaigns.
- A card. Every member receives a Folk Union card. This is proof that you stand with us.
HOW IT WORKS
- Assemblies. We meet online each season, where members propose, discuss, and vote on actions.
- Branches. Local chapters meet in pubs and community spaces. They organise events, share resources, and feed into the national body.
- Collective action. We resist commodification and nationalism through campaigns, publications, and gatherings.
- Support. Members can propose projects for union support. Funds, volunteers, skills, space.
DUES
Membership dues are £1 a month (or £12 a year).
You may give more if you can.
You may give less if you cannot.
We ask for dues not as a fee for service, but as a show of solidarity. Your contribution goes into the commons: to help cover site maintenance, union printing, pamphlets, and posters, to support folk events and projects, to build a fund for practitioners in need, to ensure independence from brands, institutions, and profiteers

You will receive a membership card by post and a welcome letter from the union.
WHY PAY?
Because folk is not free when stolen by capital or nationalism.
Because culture belongs to the people who make it.
