A FOLK UNION PAPER
Printed Booklet
This is the third Folk Union Paper. It’s a short essay which explores the relationship between the folk scene and the culture which supports it. It looks in detail at the growing tension around authority, authenticity and ownership within contemporary folk culture. It argues that contemporary folk exists in a state of contradiction, positioned simultaneously as open and exclusive, communal and hierarchical, anti-capitalist yet deeply dependent on the structures of modern capitalism. In doing so, it questions whether anyone can meaningfully claim authority over a culture which, by definition, belongs to everyone.
Both a 18 page digitally printed zine or a PDF are available.
